Smith/Burgett Architects is a small firm located in Urbana, Illinois. During our thirty year history, we have done work all over central Illinois and a limited amount of work across the country. We provide services in architecture, engineering, planning, and interior design, and have worked on a diverse variety of project types, including office, parking, recreational, financial, commercial, mercantile, religious, educational, medical, industrial, and residential. Our projects range from new construction to space planning of existing spaces for adaptive reuse.

ARCHITECTURE
We believe that architecture is successful only if the building is attractive, the client is happy, and the space is well-suited to its intended function. The inspiration for architectural design comes from the surrounding context (the neighboring buildings, the landscape, and the urban fabric), from the function to be housed within (with consideration to potential second and third uses over the building's lifespan), and from the wants and desires of the client. Our firm has great respect for historic structures and believes in the preservation of our architectural heritage. We have won numerous awards from the Preservation and Conservation Association for our sensitive treatment of historic projects. We are proud of our proven ability to design buildings that can be constructed on time and on budget, where the client is satisfied with the appearance, materials quality, construction quality, and price.

ENGINEERING
More than beautiful and functional architectural systems are needed to create a successful building. Such a building also requires the careful coordination of various other building systems, including structural systems, mechanical systems, electrical systems, lighting systems, plumbing systems, security systems, and sustainable systems. We have the ability to design several of these systems in house, but we also place great importance in maintaining positive relationships with the best consultants in the business. The combination of our expertise with their's results not in a series of independent systems, but a harmoniously optimized whole and maximization of the building's overall value.

PLANNING
Planning your construction project is one of the most important steps. It determines the ultimate success or failure of the project. We provide numerous services that can get your project started on the right foot, including surveys of building users, analysis of existing facilities and spaces, analysis of space needs now and in the future, project phasing, budgeting, and office furniture/partition layout. These services are completed as required for each project, but can be separated into a different contract to allow for appropriate phasing.

INTERIOR DESIGN
We believe strongly in the necessity of professionally executed interior design. All licensed architects in our firm are also registered interior designers. Interior design is an important component of a complete project. A seamless design both inside and outside can mean the difference between a vibrant space and a generic building, so we prefer to design both concurrently. However, we are also well versed in tenant interior projects. The insertion of a tenant into an existing space requires careful planning and a thorough understanding of the client's needs. A coherent yet distinct aesthetic for the client is also an important aspect of the project. We will assist in the selection of carpets, tiles, laminates, paints, stains, wall coverings, fabrics, and other finishes. To finalize the process, we will present a finish sample board showing actual product pieces and swatches and their relationship to other finishes.
